All told, Great Britain lost 18 colonies: 13 to the United States, 3 to Spain, and 2 to France.

Two of the colonies they lost to Spain were East and West Florida. This was an interesting territorial exchange because just twenty years prior, in 1763, Spain had traded Florida (both East and West) to Great Britain for control of Havana, Cuba after the Seven Years’ War

In 1783 the Treaty of Paris was signed, returning possession of Florida to Spain.

In 1810, parts of West Florida were taken by the United States during the Loiusiana Purchase.

38 years after Spain regained possession of East Florida from Britain, Spain gave Florida to the United States for 5 million dollars in repsonse to Andrew Jackson’s occupation of Pensacola in 1818.
